Installation -
How to install GPS/J?
The installation of GPS/J is a short, straightforward process of downloading and installing the application, initiated by visiting our WAP page (wap.gpsj.eu; you have to obtain the activation key first). You can also transfer the JAR archive using OBEX (via Bluetooth®).
Installation of GPS/J was unsuccessful.
There may be many reasons for that:
- don't try to install the POI-equipped JAR on Nokia Series 40!
- don't install the JAD file from a PC. Try it with the JAR archive!
- clear up some space for GPS/J!
- installing via OTA? Is the GPRS service operational?
I have no GPRS service active, please send me the JAR/map via E-mail.
You can download the JAR with the following URL (key is case-sensitive):
http://jsp.gpsj.eu/app/jar.jsp?key=?????
Remember that you are allowed to use the JAR on one device only! Running it on more devices will block the activation key.
If you cannot use GPRS to download a map, please integrate the map into the JAR using the JAR configurator!
Can I use the application with my new phone at no extra cost?
Yes. Just install it via WAP using your activation key. But don't forget to uninstall it on the previous device, as accidental usage may black-list the key.
Licence has expired
If you encoutered the message "Licence has expired" but you are not using the Trial, please contact the GPS/J support.

Upgrade -
Just how to?
To upgrade the application you have to submit the current
S/N (you can find it in the "About GPS/J" menu of the application, 5 first digits equals to the activation key generated after purchase) or transaction ID, the PayPal or Handango one. Please navigate to the Support page.
A new activation key is generated, the previous one is invalidated. Navigate to wap.gpsj.eu to download the new
JAR. Only one upgrade is allowed. Remember to change the
S/N in your Portal profile!

Maps -
Activation key for a map is used up
There is no limit for downloading a map from a GPS/J instance. But, if you reinstall the application, it will get a new serial number. Contact our tech support team and ask them to clear the S/N on your key!
How to download a map?
Navigate to Menu>Map>Options>Manage Maps>Download, enter the activation key for the map and click the Download button.
Not enough space for the map.
If it is Nokia S40 or a Motorola device, in most cases there is no way to store anything bigger than ca 450kB. On other hardware try to clean up some space, remove unneeded games from the Java environment.
Downloaded map isn't shown
Restart the application! If it doesn’t work, delete the map and download it again. If you still don’t see the map, delete all maps by Remove all option to clear the map memory (Menu>Map>Options>Manage maps>Remove all). Then download maps once again starting from this causing problems.
Map download from the WAP site crashes.
During map download loadMap-IOE exception is raised.
Check that you selected the right access point for GPS/J connectivity to the Internet. Restart the application and download the map again.
If it still doesn’t work try to download it once again later.
Finally if nothing workes. please contact our support team!

What to do with a KERN_EXEC?
Frankly speaking? - nothing. If there is a problem with OS or any other firmware, we cannot help. Midlet environment is called a sand box, if its operations end in a KERN-EXEC, it means device vendor is to be blamed. Maybe firmware change would help...
How to create user-defined maps?
This feature is not available, you cannot create and download your own POI databases, yet.
MapQuest download fails
MapQuest changed the address of its site. Please upgrade (for <2.7 users) or download the application again using your own activation key.

Portal -
How to register?
You can register online or from the GPS/J application. Just navigate to Menu>Setup>Portal profile, then enter your login and password, and click Save button. After successful connection to the server your new settings will be saved.
I forgot my login/password
To remind login or password you should start GPS/J and navigate to Menu>Setup>Portal profile. After connection to the server you will see your current login and password.
Do I really need to register?
No, registering is not a must. You can store tracks on the server, retrieve them using GPS/J or send to other users without setting the login and password. You will get warnings ("no nick name") which you may ignore. The profile is created during the first usage of the Portal. Registering (binding the login with S/N)
is needed to receive tracks from other users or to make use of reach Portal functionality (export to different formats, upload, making tracks public).
How to share a track?
If you would like to share your track with someone you may use "Send to"
option in GPS/J or "Send to" button on the tracks list page of the Portal.
The recepient has to have login set, in other words, has to register first.
Can tracks stored on the server be linked?
Tracks stored on our server can be linked if made public. See the tracks
details and click on "make public" to see the exact URL of the track!
What to do after upgrade?
After having upgraded the application you have to change the S/N in your
Portal profile. Otherwise you will not have access from the application
to tracks gathered before the upgrade as the new JAR will
be bound to another activation key. Any action initiated from the
application will create a new profile on the Portal.
If you have to make use of the Portal before changing the profile,
you may send all new objects to the previous profile afterwards,
remove the new one, and change the S/N in the old profile to the new one.
How to ban receiving objects from a user?
By default every one can send you tracks or waypoints.
But your privacy is secured as the sender must know your login to be able to send you tracks or waypoints. If you don't want to
receive tracks from a user, you can put his/her login on the blacklist.
Just click on "black list" link on the track/waypoint list page.
Can I export a track to a text file?
Tracks or waypoints can be exported to three commonly used formats - CSV, KML and GPX. Navigate to the details of an object and choose the format!
How to resolve IO errors?
Version 2.7 uses sockets to communicate with Portal server, which is a source of potential problems. With 2.8 http connections have come, but you can check if you have correctly configured the midlet connection profile to bypass eg. the WAP gateway.
Waypoint and tracks -
An error occurs during track/waypoint export/import to/from filesystem.
JSR 75 is required to import and export track/waypoints to the filesystem.
Probably the problem is caused by application's rights to read/write from the filesystem.
On the list of applications go to GPS/J and then choose Options. Then you have to choose something like (it depends on the phone): Application Access>Data access>Add and edit data and change from "not allowed" to "ask every time" or "allowed".
In Symbian handsets navigate to: Menu>Tools>Application Manager. Choose GPS/J>Options>Suite settings>Edit user data and change from "not allowed" to anything else (e.g. "ask every time", "allowed").
Error during track/point saving occurs.
The most frequent problem during saving tracks or waypoints is caused by the memory subsystem (RMS). Some devices (e.g. Nokia 6021, 6230) have limited RMS memory (see our Nokia Series 40 page ). If a problem occurs, delete some “big” tracks and downloaded maps to clean memory. Sometimes nothing helps and then reinstall of application is needed. In this case export all data (tracks and waypoint) to files or to Portal. After reinstallation import them back. If problem occurs very often, record track without altitude and timestamp, these tracks are much smaller. To change tracks settings navigate to Menu>Tracks>Settings.
For devices with limited midlet memory, we recommend to save tracks with standard time interval (every 10 seconds) and not exceeding 1000 points in one track. Apart from that you should not save tracks which have more then 3000 points (you can check how many points the track has in Menu>Tracks>track name>Details).

Advertisers -
How it works?
If you like GPS/J application, you can advertise it by placing a banner on
your website, which links to the PayPal site.
How it works:
1. The advertiser registers (click here) and gets HTML code to place onto his web
page,
2. The visitor of your page clicks on the banner,
3. PayPal purchase page is displayed with the item number specific for the
advertiser,
4. After purchase the buyer is redirected to the GPS/J page where he gets
the activation key for the application, which is bound to the advertiser,
5. The advertiser receives an e-mail confirmation, if required,
6. Once a month advertisers (you) get the 50% share of the revenue decreased by the cost of transfer (you have to have a PayPal account). There must be at least 2 purchases to
activate the transfers.
How much will I get?
Once a month advertisers get the 50% share of the revenue decreased by the cost of transfer (PayPal). There must be at least 2 purchases to activate the transfers.
How to see my current revenue?
If required, you are notified by e-mail about each purchase. Log in to advertiser account to see the up-to-date log!
GPS receivers -
GPS/J does not see my GPS receiver.
First refer to the description of supported devices! So far we have noticed problems with SiRF binary protocol switched on, mobile devices which expected signed midlets to communicate via the Bluetooth, and SonyEricsson stuff flashing the backlight off bringing the BT communication down as well. To be comprehensive - sometimes there was no GPS receiver at all.
GPS/J losing connectivity
If your phone is SonyEricsson with JP-6 Java platform (e.g. K600, K750) you should turn on the SE-anti screensaver option in Setup menu.
Otherwise try to hold GPS receiver closer to the phone, especially outdoor (e.g. on a bike trip)
What about built-in receivers?
Version 2.8 will introduce support for built-in GPS reeivers.
